Perception Through Slivers

Year 03 | Semester 05 | 2018

Putting the study trip learnings to use, this studio focused on context-specific designing. The terrains of Bhutan, being an unfamiliar site, were extremely interesting as a design project. Taking into consideration the rich history as well the natural environment of the place, the contemporary structure to be designed must differentiate from the surroundings but at the same time be in conformity with it.

In order to maintain this delicate balance, the project was integrated into the site keeping in mind that it only accentuates the existing built forms without taking any of the attention away from them. This was addressed by emphasizing on the lines of sight. Framing views inwards and outwards, creating gradual revelations as one moves through the structure. The building opens up to the landscape with framed apertures and key views that the user experiences while moving between the different rooms.

Process

Concept

Through layering, overlapping and insertions of various masses and elements, slivers are formed. These voids serve as a medium of visual connectivity with the surrounding environment, as well as a source of light and ventilation.

The project aims to seamlessly integrate itself within the site by keeping in mind to be an accessory to the existing historical buildings and in no way overpower its context.

Close attention was also paid to the atmospheric conditions where adaptations of light, shadow and space orientations were made in accordance to the natural light and weather patterns passing over and through the building. The longer axis of the building was aligned to the direction of the prevailing winds and a deep overhang was provided for shade.

Unity and harmony within the structure as well as with the surrounding context was obtained through the method of repetition and continuity with respect to the colour, shape, texture, directions and angles of the building. The retaining walls of the contoured site were integrated within the building as well to somewhat blur the boundaries of the inside and outside.
